On Change
The next time Sammy came to visit, Uncle Joe sat in his large worn leather chair that provided a crow’s-nest overlooking the city. He was sipping his coffee as he watched the sunset illuminate the Empire State Building at “the second most important time of the day,” as he described it. Uncle Joe mostly loved the sunrise.
“So, Sammy, how’s the company doing?” Uncle Joe asked.
“Pretty good, I’d say.”
“That’s like telling someone that your sister has pretty hair or your brother has nice eyes.”
Sammy smiled but stayed silent.
“Sammy, what’s up?”
“Nothing, really. Just a lack of energy.”
“Your own lack of energy or others’?”
“Others’.”
“Like who?”
“Mary and George.”
“So what are they doing or not doing?”
“Nothing, really.” ...
