Yes, a picture can be worth a thousand words. A good visual can tremendously increase the information value of a document. Often, an illustration can explain something clearly that is very hard to describe in words.

People have different types of learning styles. The three most common are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In a nutshell, visual learners benefit from illustrations, auditory learners read aloud or otherwise verbalize to themselves, and kinesthetic learners learn by doing. (Good classroom training incorporates all of these styles at once, with a speaker, slide presentations, and hands-on practice.) Adding illustrations to your documentation lets you appeal to visual learners.
