Use and Misuse of Consultants

Changes in the management of corporate America during the last two decades of the twentieth century have loosed a veritable army of consultants upon the land. At the same time, there has grown up an industry of consultants-by-choice, both in firms and as solo practitioners. Never before has it been possible to find so much “rent-a-talent” and in so many different areas of expertise. With so many consultants to choose from, it is inevitable that their skills and abilities are all over the map. Hiring a consultant, therefore, requires that you exercise due diligence first, just as if you were hiring an employee. Consultants have many legitimate uses but can also be misused in the management of projects.
