Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award winning author and poet. Born in India in 1956, she left Kolkata for USA when nineteen to study English Literature. Having obtained her master’s degree from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, she now teaches Creative Writing at the University of Houston.

Widely known for her works Arranged Marriage (1995), a collection of short stories, and The Mistress of Spices (1997), a novel, she has also produced several poetry collections such as Dark like the River (1987), The Reason for Nasturtium (1990) and Black Candle (1991).
