The independent sector and independent schools

Independent schools are largely self-governing and are not required to comply with all legislation covering schools maintained by the state. Under the Education Act 2002 all schools in England must be registered with the Department for Education (DfE), in Wales the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS). In accordance with the Education Scotland Act 1980, independent schools in Scotland are registered by the Scottish government. However, independent schools throughout the UK receive little or no direct state funding and are free from much central and local government control.
