Change Strategies for Creating Inclusion

We have worked with many companies whose approach to diversity and inclusion could be best described as “activity-itis.” In these companies the focus seems to be on creating visibility and on activity connected to diversity and inclusion. The assumption is that these activities will increase awareness, and awareness will “leak out” and have tangible, long-lasting impacts. In our experience, while there can be some short-term positive impact from activities such as cross-cultural luncheons, diversity “brown bags,” guest speakers, diversity book clubs, and other one-time events, the impact on the long term is minimal and can actually work to undermine inclusion.
