Chapter 13. SDP

The Session Description Protocol (SDP) is an application-layer protocol intended to describe multimedia sessions. It is a text-based protocol. When describing a session the caller and callee indicate their respective "receive" capabilities, media formats and receive address/port.

Capability exchange can be performed during session setup or during the session itself – i.e., while the session is in progress.

At the time of writing, a new SDP specification is in the process of being finalized. The current version is [Draft-ietf-mmusic-sdp-new] and the earlier version was specified in [RFC2327].
