When Tony Hayward took over as CEO at BP in 2007, he promised he would improve the company's safety record following a 2005 accident at the company's Texas City refinery that had killed fifteen workers and injured 180 others. But the Deepwater Horizon accident that killed eleven oil rig workers and caused the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 has put pain to that claim, particularly as it appears that BP was cutting corners on safety to achieve profitability faster.
