Clearly engagement is not a simple matter. It is a complex human process that is vital to an organization's competitiveness and business success. The so-called Great Recession that began in 2008 with the collapse of the financial sector shows how fragile the process of engagement really is. A recent report from Towers Watson claims that in the aftermath of devastating layoffs and high unemployment, employee engagement had declined by 9 percentage points overall and an alarming 23 percentage points for top-performing employees (Finney, 2010).
