Preparing for the M&A

Every corporate communicator faces the possibility of being called into the CEO's office and asked to have a news release and communications plan ready to go by the next day to announce a major merger or acquisition. In this situation, there are three things for the communicator to do:

  1. Ask why the M&A is being undertaken and what synergies it is trying to achieve so this information can be incorporated into the communications strategy.
  2. List all of the firm's constituencies who will be affected by this M&A and ask about each of them: Who will likely benefit and who might be hurt by this deal? Who will be most resistant and what must we do to overcome that resistance?
