Listening to many of those writing and speaking about the new communication landscape, one might conclude that all communication is social and older methods of communication are relics of a bygone era.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Throughout history, new media has never completely killed old media. Rather, old media adapts to the realities of the new landscape, often (but not always) shrinking as they continue to exist based on their strengths.
