HYPOTHESIS TESTING FOR TWO POPULATIONS

This chapter expands the hypothesis testing procedures outlined in Chapter 10 from one population to two. Because each procedure depends upon the sample size and whether or not the population standard deviation is known, the structure of the chapter closely mirrors the structure of Chapter 10. Additionally, the case of dependent samples is investigated.
In Chapter 10, you proved that a population mean (or proportion) was either less than, greater than, or not equal to a specific value. In this chapter, you’ll examine two data sets at once and compare their means and proportions, trying to prove that one is bigger than the other or that they’re not equal.
