HYPOTHESIS TESTING FOR A SINGLE POPULATION
Time to reject some null hypotheses
Hypothesis testing is the cornerstone of inferential statistics. At its heart, it involves making a statement about a population parameter, such as the mean or proportion, and then using a sample from the population to conclude whether that statement is true.
The challenge for this chapter is to choose testforagivenproblem.Oneimportant theappropriatehypothesis factor is the size of the sample. For large samples, you can rely on the central limit theorem and the normal distribution. When the sample size is small and the population standard deviation is unknown, switch to the t-distribution (introduced in Chapter 9).
