Designated or protected groups

The groups of people who are designated for employment equity or equal opportunity purposes because they are underrepresented in the labor force or concentrated in lower-wage-earning occupations. The four designated groups in Canada are women, visible minorities, persons with disability and Aboriginals. In the United States, the protected groups include men and women on the basis of sex; any group that shares a common race, religion, color or national origin; people over 40; and people with physical or mental handicaps. The Equal Employment Opportunity laws were passed to correct a history of unfavorable treatment of women and minority group members.
