THE banquet staff was terribly busy. A phalanx of workers was spread throughout the cavernous Grand Ballroom, in the midst of the final preparations for the reception and dinner tonight for the king and queen. In the anteroom to the ballroom, four people were sitting at long tables folding napkins and wrapping a galax leaf around each one. Long-stemmed yellow flowers in slender glass vases were being prepared as centerpieces for the tables. Inside the ballroom, tables were being arranged and white linen tablecloths were being put on them. A piano had been wheeled out on the stage and electricians were hooking up speakers.
