I WALKED through the lobby, and suddenly the peace and mystery of midnight were over everything. Outside, in the darkness, light rain was spattering down. The early-morning hours were the mellowest for the hotel, aside from tantrums in some of the guest rooms. The nervous buzz that persisted during the daylight hours was gone. Everything was quiet and empty, except for a porter here and there with a scrub bucket shampooing a carpet or sweeping up a floor. This was the time when much of the cleaning of the hotel’s public places was done. Vacuums intermittently whined as they rolled over lobby rugs. Nothing was open, except for room service.

I took the stairs down to the basement to look in on room service. Food apparently was not much in demand. ...
