I WENT over to sit in on the weekly deliberations of the executive committee of the hotel. The committee was meeting in a small conference room adjacent to Jeffrey Flowers’s austere office. Six executives had shown up—the head of human resources, the food and beverage director, the marketing director, the comptroller, Flowers, and Hud Hinton. The room was shaped like a shoe box, the oblong table in it so close to the side walls that the participants’ backs almost touched them. A pot of coffee had been plopped down in the middle of the table, and a stack of Styrofoam cups stood next to it. Flowers, a tightly controlled man, slumped down at the head of the table. Behind him was a small window looking out over Central Park.
