Few things in life are perfectly black or white. That is the art of analysis—describing the gray. A large part of technical analysis is science. It's measuring supply and demand. But I'm good at guessing the picture behind the puzzle when I don't have all the pieces.

Gail M. Dudack, CMT, is managing director of Midwood Securities in New York. Before joining Midwood, she was a managing partner and director of research products at Dudack Research Group in New York, managing director of research and the chief investment strategist for SunGard Institutional Brokerage, and the chief investment strategist for UBS AG and its predecessor S.G. Warburg PLC. Dudack began her Wall Street career at the Pershing division of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (now Credit Suisse First Boston Corporation).

Dudack is a frequent guest on CNBC, PBS's Nightly Business Report, and Bloomberg Television and a popular speaker at many business forums and societies. She is a past president of the Market Technicians Association (MTA), a founding member of the International Federation of Technical Analysts (IFTA), chair emeritus of the SIFMA's Securities Industry Institute, a past arbitrator for the NASD, and an exmember of the Department of Labor's Business Research Advisory Council for consumer and producer price indexes.
