Achieving Perfect Exposures

Correct exposure in any lighting situation is best determined with an exposure meter, which can be a separate handheld meter or one built into the camera system. All metering systems produce good results if used properly. It is therefore essential that you learn in detail how the different metering methods work, how the different meters measure the light, and how they must be used to provide the correct results with any subject in any lighting situation.

There are two methods of exposure metering. You can measure the light that falls on the subject, known as incident light metering, or you can measure the light that is reflected off the subject or scene, known as reflected light metering.
