NARRATIVE SKILLS IN COACHING: LISTENING FOR THE WHOLE STORY
Given the emphasis in narrative coaching on context, culture, and the conversational “container,” it is no surprise that listening plays a particularly key role in this approach. Coaches can best discern the path forward in the conversation moment to moment and act as a guide along the way through simultaneously paying attention to themselves, the other person, the field between them, and the stories as they emerge. In doing so, they stay present to the lived experience of the conversation as much as possible and work with what is there. The research on attachment (Wallin, 2007) and on mindfulness, presence, and rapport (Siegel, 2007) provide a strong evidence base for this approach. ...
