INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY

Industrial ecology is a field of study that uses a framework for sustainability based on viewing the environment, economics, and technology from a broad sociological perspective. Based on systems theory, industrial ecology focuses on understanding emergent behavior at the point of intersection between human and natural systems (Allenby, 2006).

Organizations that utilize an industrial ecological framework aim to create an industrial system that behaves like an ecosystem, in which the wastes of one species may be resources for another.
