GENDER AND FEMALE LEADERSHIP: SALLY HELGESEN

Sally Helgesen asserts that because of a variety of factors, women in leadership positions display certain distinct leadership qualities that have become both needed and valued in today’s world. Her research (1995) found the following behaviors particular to female managers:

  • Women worked at a steady pace, but with small breaks scheduled throughout the day.
  • Women did not view unscheduled tasks and encounters as interruptions. They tended to view them as part of caring, being involved, helping, and being responsible.
  • Women made time for activities not directly related to their work.
