COGNITIVE AND INSTRUCTIONAL COACHING

Two methodologies important to educational coaching of teachers and administrators are Cognitive Coaching and instructional coaching. Each is grounded in research and is applicable to most teaching situations.

Cognitive Coaching (Costa & Garmston, 2002) was developed from Cogan and Goldhammer’s clinical supervision model (1969). It was designed to help administrators support teachers’ growth toward self-directed learning by applying humanistic principles in teacher evaluations.
