GROUP DEVELOPMENT: HOW THE GROUP DEVELOPS OVER TIME
The third lens, group development, assumes that groups are living organisms that grow and develop over time. Each phase of development can be characterized by certain needs and challenges. Typically, models of group development follow a progression of stages, each stage being contingent on successful completion of the prior one. Three well-known and widely used models are offered by Bennis and Shepard (1956), Schutz (1958, 1971, 1994), and Tuckman (1965; Tuckman & Jensen, 1977). These models summarize well-established knowledge about group development.
