LEADERSHIP STYLES AND GETTING RESULTS: GOLEMAN

Daniel Goleman’s book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ (1995) brought the theory of emotional intelligence into the mainstream. Emotional intelligence, the ability to manage oneself and one’s relationships, draws on four fundamental capabilities: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social skill (Goleman, 2000). The concept identifies the “right stuff” to be a leader and recognizes that leadership is more of an art than a science (2004). Each emotional intelligence capability includes traits and competencies that allow for measurement and ongoing development. The following list shows the capabilities and competencies.
