THE USE OF “FLOW”: CSIKSZENTMIHALYI

Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi (2003) described being “in flow” as an occasion when time passes seamlessly; there is a sense of using all your innate skills with no self-doubt present; the activity entails some stretch, but it is not overwhelming; there is tangibility in the reward and a feeling of pure pleasure.

Coaching Applications

  • Describe “flow” characteristics to your client and ask her to identify three or four such moments in her life and career. Ask, What made this such a satisfying moment? What was the context? Who else was there? What was your own role?
  • Listen to your client’s description of peak experiences in his career and write down all his key words without editing. Hand him this list and let him highlight ...
