Sternberg (1985) defines intelligence in terms of the ability to achieve success in life based on one’s personal standards and within one’s sociocultural context. Achieving success involves capitalizing on one’s strengths and correcting or compensating for one’s weaknesses.
Culture determines what characteristics constitute intelligence. Solutions to problems that are considered intelligent in one culture may be different from those considered intelligent in another. However, the mental processes needed to reach these solutions are the same.
