COUNTERINJUNCTIONS AND DRIVERS

From among the many different instructions, or counterinjunctions, people receive in childhood—for example, Work hard, Be my little princess, Be good, Tell the truth—TA identifies five drivers that are especially powerful; these are ways we defend ourselves against the negatives of the injunctions. They can have the force of superstition. Hearing You’re only OK if . . . , we believe that disaster will follow if we don’t obey.

Be Perfect. Demanding perfection of ourselves, we may also expect it of others, which can be hard on those around us.

Be Strong. Remaining calm, aloof, and controlled, we may stand apart from playful activities fearing we’ll look stupid.
