Coaching has come a long way since my own early dabblings some twenty years ago, when I and my colleagues, already intrigued and enthralled by the activity we naively believed that we, uniquely, had discovered, were perplexed by what to call it. We described it as “one to one work”—a bland label that now quite pleases me because we did not use the feeble word “help.” And thank god we had no idea that other people, also early adopters, were using the word “mentoring” with all its long-lasting potential for confusion.
