These are tough times for charities although demand on many charities’ services has never been higher. Demands on housing, mental health, debt counselling and drug rehabilitation charities, to name a few, are more pressing than perhaps they have ever been.

The UK still has one of the most favourable tax regimes for charitable giving in the world, making it the most attractive place to make gifts of any size, from small cash donations to substantial gifts of shares or property. Donations through the Gift Aid scheme alone reached £4,578m1 in 2009/10, according to HM Revenue & Customs.
