Google's phenomenal growth has attracted many predators who want a piece of the action. Perhaps most alarming—and most threatening to Google—are the telecommunication companies that built the Internet's infrastructure. Without their telephone lines, the Web would not have been possible, so they are asking for a place at the table that they relinquished back in the mid-1990s. As long as the market remained relatively small, the large network operators let this go. After all, the Web brought them traffic. But now they want to pick up a new hand and get back into the game.
