The fiercest desire in middle age is to do nothing at all. I wonder about this. On the one hand, giving in to idleness feels like the first step on the leafy back-road to retirement, a long slow death of the mind and of the spirit, before the body finally conks out. On the other hand, the prospect of a quick lie-down right now seems rather enticing. Why fight it?
