When some of the world’s largest financial institutions hit crisis in 2008, it was primarily national governments that rescued them. The governments used taxpayers’ money to save “their” banks or “their” insurance companies—even when, as in the case of The Royal Bank of Scotland or AIG, the company’s interests stretched right across the world.
