My advice to companies is that the future will be won by those firms that have products that can serve multiple market needs and that focus on gaining share in those segments. While venturing into some of the lower segments can indeed jeopardize overall margins, it is crucially important from a strategic point of view. It weakens competition, it generates new sales growth in segments that were previously untouched, it builds market positions for the long term, it works with consumers and customers who aspire to premium products but can’t afford them now – and it prepares the ground for future up-selling.
