Stock market indexes are one of the first financial markets that novice spread bettors are encouraged to learn with. This is because they are more familiar to the average investor, being regularly quoted in the media and in the business press. Many major share markets have at least one benchmark index to represent the fortunes of that country’s stock market. They are fairly easy to understand: their performance, up or down, is intended to reflect the average performance of the shares of the companies that make up that index.
