AMBIENT LIGHT

Or available light. Refers to the existing light—either natural like the sun or artificial like household bulbs—rather than the flash output.

AUTOMATIC MODE

A setting on the flash and camera where the exposure is worked out for you by the system’s internal electronics. This can work using the camera’s own built-in TTL system or via a cell on the flash itself.

BACKLIGHT

A light that separates the subject from the background. Sometimes called a separation light.

BARN DOORS

Barn doors attach to the front of flashes and are intended to stop light spilling onto certain areas of the subject.

BEAM ANGLE

The width of the pool of light output from a flashgun. Typically altered to match a focal length of lens.
