Freezing Motion

Flash is ideal for freezing fast movement. Some flashes can be as quick as 1/10,000 sec or even faster, though the majority peak at around 1/6000 sec, which is still more than fast enough for most applications.

The problem occurs when you add ambient light into the equation. Unless you can use a high enough shutter speed and narrow enough aperture to virtually eliminate the ambient light, you will see a slight ghosting of the image.

This photo of a soccer player was shot at dusk on a bright day, so there was still plenty of ambient light around. By using a Phase One 645DF medium-format camera with matching P40+ digital back and a 55mm wide-angle Schneider leaf-shutter lens, the flash can sync as high as 1/1600 sec.
