Creating Contemporary Portraits

A look that appears totally natural is a contemporary style popular with many magazines. This style is often about finding a slightly unusual location and making it look like the subject has been captured unawares, or is perhaps holding a stiff pose that makes the viewer identify with the awkwardness of the situation.

These portraits were carefully constructed to look as if they were naturally lit by the ambient light inside the café, though they were not. The ambient light from overhead skylight panels was underexposed slightly, and to put more of a highlight on the subject, a flash fitted with a small softbox (which had a honeycomb grid), was used.
