High-speed Sync

Until recently, it wasn’t possible to use flashes successfully at shutter speeds higher than maximum sync speed. If you did, part of the image would not be lit by flash and you would see a black shadow from the shutter curtain, as demonstrated on page 61. But now there is an option to go even higher, thanks to some clever new technology.

Firstly, you have to know why you would want to go higher than the stated maximum sync speed. This is obviously related directly to the shutter speed, where you want to ensure there is no blur on a fast-moving subject. At the 1/250 sec maximum sync of most cameras, there is still a very good chance of some motion blur.
