Chapter 13. How to Handle Challenging Performance-Appraisal Situations

“The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry” is a famous line adapted from “To a Mouse,” by Robert Burns. (The actual line reads, “The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley,” but that doesn’t have quite the same ring.) It is commonly interpreted to mean that no matter how carefully we plan, something may still go wrong. At the risk of being accused of inappropriately waxing poetic, I suggest that this line applies to those who have diligently prepared for the performance review, only to find that the meeting does not proceed as anticipated, due to unexpected employee behavior.
