Chapter 9. How to Begin

Everything you’ve read thus far leads to the face-to-face meeting between you and your employees. As with job applicants, for whom the first few minutes set the tone for the rest of the interview, so, too, does the beginning of a performance appraisal meeting determine the course that the rest of the meeting is likely to take. Specifically, you need to be attuned to the environment in which the meeting takes place and focus on putting the employee at ease. But first, ask yourself some important questions.
