Parting Thoughts

There’s no doubt that innovation is hard. It can be humbling when an idea that generated such enthusiasm during the planning stages ends up disappointing in the marketplace. Following the guidance in The First Mile should help readers at the very least approach innovation with more confidence by understanding what they can do to more scientifically manage its risks.

I offer six pieces of advice to end The First Mile.

1. Be humble. Any idea is going to be partially right and partially wrong. Even Steve Jobs didn’t get it right all of the time! Humility helps to slay one of the biggest first mile enemies—the false confidence that comes from accepting an assumption as a fact.
