IT WAS DINNERTIME IN CHICAGO. JESSICA FINISHED READING A book to Alitzel—Spot’s Favorite Words—and together they adjourned to the kitchen of her mother’s house. Jessica slid Alitzel into a highchair and gently draped a bib around her daughter’s neck. She then opened a cupboard and scanned a shelf laden with jars of baby food. Jessica reached for the pureed sweet potato—creamy and orange, it was one of Alitzel’s favorites, just like the real thing was Aron’s favorite in Uganda. Jessica twisted the lid and it popped open.
