Glossary

The world of film editing is full of jargon and technical terms, much of it very difficult to grasp at first. This glossary defines many of those terms along with a few that are not used in this book. You can use it as an all-purpose reference to the mystical world of the film editing room.

16×9 A wide-screen video format in which the aspect ratio is 16 units in width by 9 units in height, as opposed to the normal television ratio of 4:3.

2,000-foot reels (also 2,000’ reels) Reels of cut negative.

2:3 pulldown In the United States, film is shot at 24 frames per second while video is shot at 30 frames per second. Because of this, a special formula is required to add the frames necessary to properly convert film images to video images. ...
