This chapter will explain how to understand the Family Wealth Sustainability Index and use its results to create your unique Roadmap to Sustainability. Families that already have a structure in place for discussing issues and making decisions may feel comfortable meeting on their own. For those families that don't, however, it might be important to either call on a trusted advisor or engage a consultant to facilitate this and future discussions and planning sessions. The main goal of these meetings is to understand the findings, agree to take the journey together, and develop the process (the timetable) for how your family will take the journey. While attaining sustainability is the endpoint, the process of getting there is vital. It is through this process that family members get engaged and take ownership of their desired destination. Together family members learn not only about what is possible, but also about each other, how to build trust, and how to identify who has special talents, capabilities, and leadership skill.
