Before we investigate how redirecting feedback is best delivered through a coaching conversation, let us suggest a few guidelines for providing tough feedback:

• Coach with backbone and heart.

• Stay on the bottom rung of the ladder; keep your feedback focused on objective reality.

• Drip irrigation works best; do not pummel your colleagues with data.

• Ask before you tell; make sure that your employee is doing most of the talking.
