Tell It Like It Is

Delivering Unwelcome Information Without Doing Permanent Damage

More than 2,500 years ago, Socrates noted that “None love the messenger who brings bad news.” Perhaps no situation taxes our ability to be courteous and clear at the same time as when we are delivering information that our audience doesn’t want to hear.

Even in relationships built on excellent communication, communicating when one or both parties are under stress increases the opportunities for communication breakdown. Whether in the workplace, at home, or in social situations, being able to deliver unwelcome information without damaging or destroying a relationship can be a huge asset both personally and professionally.
