PERFORMANCE-BASED REFINEMENT GUIDES

11.1 INTRODUCTION

A new approach for forming refinement guides is developed in this chapter. This is accomplished by comparing an approximation of the exact solution that is emerging from the finite element result to the modeling capabilities of the individual finite elements. This physically based approach contrasts with refinement guides currently in use that correlate the level of refinement to the magnitude of the estimated error. The new approach is outlined with the aid of Fig. 11.1.
