81. Don’t Put Yourself Down: Accept Compliments

While teaching a class on presentations skills, I complimented a woman on how much improvement she had made over the course of the day.

She replied, “Not really. I still have a lot more to improve upon.”

Her comment got me thinking about how quickly we negate compliments. It is so easy for people to deflect the nice things others say about them.

Yes, my participant still had more to learn, but she also needed to acknowledge how much she had accomplished. When you concentrate only on the negative, it’s hard to be motivated to continue learning. When you focus on what you have achieved, you are more likely to embrace a positive approach to future growth.
