77. Doing the Write Thing: Always Look for One

I had coffee with a colleague at a very nice cafe in New York. After we paid the bill, the waiter gave us a postcard with the restaurant’s information on it. Unfortunately, the restaurant’s name was misspelled in the Internet address.

It is unprofessional and potentially costly to an organization to have mistakes in its promotional materials or other documents.

In my writing classes, I teach the always-look-for-one concept. This means that when you are proofing your writings, keep looking until you find an error. And if you don’t find one, keep looking until you do, or until you are absolutely sure your work is error-free. It is easy to miss errors unless you have a strategy for finding them.
